i got the following email from my congressman (i have highlighted the items that i think seemed interesting to me)

You no doubt have heard about the Stimulus Package agreement between Speaker Pelosi, Minority Leader Boehner and Treasury Secretary Paulson that was announced today and is supported by the President. I won't go through all the specifics of it directly because you will hear and see that almost everywhere over the next 24 hours. But I would like to give you what I see as the pros and cons of the thing. First of all, the good stuff:
Raises FHA loan limits to $750,000 and also raises the "conforming" or "jumbo" home limits on loans guaranteed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mack to the higher of $625,000 or 150% of the median house price in a market. This will help to free up more and cheaper home loan money in high cost areas like Orange County. This should help ease the housing crisis.
Gives some taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of less than $75,000 (single) or $150,000 (joint) some of their tax money from 2007 back.
As far as I can tell, that's it on the good side.

On the bad side, here goes:

Gives roughly 35 million people who paid NO FEDERAL INCOME TAXES AT ALL a check for $300 per person in their family. So, a married couple with 3 kids would get $1500. This is a welfare transfer payment from other taxpayers, pure and simple.
Gives taxpayers with incomes over $75,000 (single) and $150,000 (joint) zero, zippo, nada. These are the people who pay most of the taxes and they will now pay a much greater share of the tax than they already do.
We don't yet know what, if any, mechanisms will be in place to keep illegal aliens from receiving these checks. If you file a tax return with no tax due and you have 4 kids, you will get a non-taxable $1800 check. The incentive for fraud will be huge.
The checks will likely not get to people before July or August, when the economic downturn is projected to be over. So, it will not provide any stimulus right now.
The FHA and Fannie and Freddie loan limit increases are not accompanied by any additional regulation. The reason these loans are cheap is because you (the taxpayers) effectively guarantee them. If taxpayers are going to guarantee them, but someone else (the shareholders of Fannie and Freddie) get the profit, then the taxpayers ought to make sure that those entities are being careful with the money. This has not been the case in the recent past. Although I have supported the higher loan limits, I have only done so on the condition that we would have better oversight of these agencys actions than we do now.
There is absolutely nothing in this proposal that encourages what we need most, which is to free up investment capital for loans and equities. This economic slowdown was caused by a credit and capital crisis. Not a consumer spending crisis. We should be trying to free up credit and capital. We are treating our arm when it's the leg that hurts. For 3 years our deficit has been declining. With this bill the deficit will balloon again to somewhere over $300 billion. This is approaching what it got to after 9/11. It is not good to increase deficits. But more than that, I fear that this increased deficit will make it politically more difficult to do the tax policy changes we SHOULD do in the near future, like extend the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, fix or eliminate the AMT and reduce or eliminate the death tax. And you can be sure that the very people who received tax benefit from this package will be asked to "pay for" the cost of this thing next year or the year after.
Neither the Democratic nor Republican leadership in the Senate has signed off on this package yet, so it could still change. But the White House and the House leadership are certainly trying to "grease the wheels" to run this through quickly and with as little change as possible.

I hate to oppose something that does give some taxpayers back some of their money and which contains some elements that will should help the housing crisis. But, I also don't want to support something that has so many negative aspects for the longer term as a trade-off for so little benefit.

I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Dont be so happy on that. The reasons behind that is to make sure that plenty of people filed in next couple of months and retrogressed again in the following months so that all people get stuck at their EAD and AP. Dont you know that EAD & AP are issue in yearly basis, with the fee increase, thats how they make money. The advantage of this is all the spouses can work and kids will get in state tuition fee, but the wait time for getting your GC will be indefinitely. Be happy and joy whatever you want now, but dont cry and complaint later saying I have been stuck in EAD & AD for more than 5 years, and remember if your EAD renewal is pending and the current EAD is expired, you are out of status and out of luck.

Another reasons on that is to ease the anger of legal immigrant, look now, everyone is so happy and forgot in last couple of months everyone is bitching about the right of legal immigrant getting the GC. I bet you, with the July bulletin, that will silent most of the selfish people like you and me on the legal immigrant issue.

    Cheer

These people have time to type 51 pages of confusing memo, but cannot draft it in simple terms or use time more wisely.

Almost all of us know and follow ...................... either we renew our H1B after 6 years or we switch on EAD, but this memo does not talk about a situation wherein one is in AOS stage and using EAD.

These guys are just too much.

I want thank you for posting this question for 2 reasons. Firstly, I think your question is valid and deserves a full answer without moral judgment. Secondly, I am intrigued by the moral arguments the question has raised (and yes there is an moral and ethical dimension to this but it is not an answer to your initial query)

My wife and I are working full time as well and have often wondered if we should hire a nanny for our 3 year old. Growing up I have had several legal nannies for 15 years and unlike most people replying to this thread I was not raised in India (thus had an Indian Nanny sponsored to a foreign country). I think someone has already answered how you can get a nanny to come to the US in a prior post on this thread. I will focus on giving you another dimension to having a nanny. My parents have sponsored nannies legally from India many times (not in the US) but very often it is very hard for them to live away from India for extended periods of time. They miss their family and depression often ensues. Most of the women who are asking for your help when they are in India don't understand how hard it is to live in the US where language, family and transportation barriers make a sponsor's home almost feel like a prison. As they get more and more depressed and lonely their behavior starts to impact the very child that the sponsor is trying to accommodate.

Do consider these issues very strongly before you sponsor a nanny from India (or any other country). Having an INDIAN (ie. not visited US before and does not speak English) nanny in the US is not the same (or remotely similar) as having an INDIAN nanny in India. :)

    Good luck with your search.

Seriously, I didn' have any idea that i would have to justify myself for a very simple question upto this extent.

    Anyways,
I understand all ur concerns about exploitation and underpay, but only because you assumed most part of the situation and you already have prejudiced view about most indian, that's why you think this way.

    1) If I pay her 1000$ per month+insurance+ticket, i think it would be the same amount i pay here. ..1200+. So no underpay. Then why would i want somebody from india??..because I m not able to find right person here.
When you talk to a nanny here, they don't even ask name of the kid , they only negotiate duties, salary etc.
Recently I had bad exp with last nanny, I am in confusion whether to complain somewhere or not. I am pretty sure you guys would have specific judgments and questions about that as well, and i would definitely ask for your opinions...:-)
After two months of various trials, I am tried.
    2) Where is exploitation comes in the picture?? I am almost alone at home with my kid...I eat salad, brown bread/ rice. So hardly any cooking. We have washing machine and dish washer....but i think i would get a company and would feel safer staying alone.
    3) I don't want to do it as a charity ofcourse, but whenever i visit india, they are asking for ways to come here.....and for a while i though that would solve a problem ....and believe me i had no idea that what a terrible monster I am....
I think here most of the people here want to convert EB3-EB2 or do labor substitution...or trying hard to get bro/sis here....and doing all possible illegal stuff to get GC........but for they have great advices and moral policies for other people

I think reddog said something like "he hates labor in indian society.." I am really amazed because i love system there
My mom has a maid from last 18 years, she get paid 30 $ per month (my father earns around 300 $ ...so that makes sense)
My mom buys clothes for her when she buys for herself in diwali. My father manages books for maid's kids. And she would advise me all the time as my mother does....
When i visit india, i get gift for her as well...And all this is not charity, because my parents are not rich enough for charity...but it's the indian societ where people give to others from whatever small amount they have....without any notion of charity....
I wish I can build something similar here.....

Just heard on CNN this Sunday morning: Arlen Specter wants to take on CIR as soon as tomorrow when the "lame duck" session starts!
He added: "let's do it right now. If we wait until next year, it will be a waste of time..."

I understand your frustration. But cool down. Core team is doing what they have to. Please every one keep in mind before blaming core team that every one is volunteer !! (They are not pay roll of IV)
I agree, even taking up this initiative is a commendable job by IV core, let alone being volunteers....and I appreciate them for that.

I do know Waldenpond had set expectations of nothing much in LD session, but since we are hearing otherwise from different sources, we want to make sure that if any H1B provisions are passed, EB provisions are not left out.

One of my cousin filed online and he got Approval AP document in hand in two weeks.
Same with one of my friend who got approved document in hand by 20 days.

Wow, Eb2 - 3% and pri dates are not current for Eb2 for India/china, what kind of system are we under? That means only 4200 (total is 140,000) was used for Eb2. This is just so darn ridiculous.

yesterday while searching for answer to my 'case close letter in error' from BEC I saw several immigration forums other than Murthy and Immi.Portal. These are great places to post information on IV site and urge people to join this group. I urge other members to post messages on all immigration forums whenever they come across one.

    pappu,

Thanks once again for your initiative. Can you list those forums here, so that it becomes easier for our members?

Their response is in a day, so , why not write to them?
Canadian PR looks good and donot need ATV if you are travelling to Canda, but its unclear if its exempted when travelling to 3rd country.

This is a completely idiotic response!! When did dependants start paying taxes? We are talking about joint filers with single income. If you are the only earning member in the family, you are still eligible up to $ 600 for spouse and $ 300 for each child if your income is less than $150K. Why should a legal resident be penalized for not having an SSN?

The package is still not approved in the senate... that is another matter.

I agree, americans with non working and non tax paying dependents still get the benefit of this rebate so there is absolutely no reason why H4 dependents should not count.

And I have one more suggestion. Let's fight to entirely stop new H1Bs (yes numbersusa will never oppose that). That might be the only way to get out of this mess. At the very least, if you don't like my first idea, let's lobby to get rid of substitute labor....

Maybe I am finally losing it :)

You are kind of right in this regard. It is meaningless to increase H1-B quotas unless there is a corresponding increase in the EB numbers. I would presume that the high levels of H1-B's issued previously without a corresponding increase in EB numbers has caused this bottleneck. The H1-B increase should have a corresponding EB increase to keep some sort of sanity in the system.

I think this will be the hottest thread of this month.
It seems like Exam results are coming out slowly slowly.
    Getting excited...
My life will not be changing at all after getting GC....
I have been fortunate to take all the decisions and implement it like job changes, house etc.... without GC. Did not even care of applying GC in 2001 and applied GC in 2005 when the H1-b expiration came by...

Congratulations to all of them who really want to change some of their life decisions after getting GC.

There is life out of GC !!!! There are millions of people not in GC queue, who are living very happily....
